Counter punching
How do you master counter punching?
➡️Mastering the art of counter punching is the next step in your evolution as a fighter. Start off by paying attention to your opponent’s offense. Like any good counter puncher, you must be patient on defence. Bide your time and keep it safe. Notice any subtle habits that your opponent may be committing when he throws his punches.
➡️Counter punching is as it sayes in the name a counter to a punch thrown at you. Training your self to be conditioned to react to a punch thrown at you. So say a jab is thrown at you, you practice defending against it and throwing a reactive punch.
➡️ This involves tireless training sessions on the pads and training with a training partner, where by you throw punches and your partner blocks and counters them, then you swap over.
➡️These sessions are invaluable to learn the counters to the various punches.
It is then progressed by technical sparring, whereby conditions are set. (One boxer throws a left lead, the other boxer, blocks and counters with a jab/ cross counter)
➡️Novice young boxers will want to race ahead into heavy head/ body full sparring sessions, however controlled tech sparring to consolidate these boxing techniques will benefit the novice boxer, much more at the early stages of a boxers tuition.
➡️These techniques are also learnt on the pads with the coach. Going through counters/ slips/ slides/rolls and learning the art of feint and counter. These once again can be consolidated between boxers in controlled tech sparring, before allowing the boxers to try and utilise these skills/ techniques in controlled and then open sparring.
➡️Counterpunching is the bridge between boxing offence and boxing defence. An effective counterpunch can help you regain the initiative and put the fight in your favour. At all times, you want the initiative. You want to maintain momentum and control the fight.
➡️Counterpunching ensures the fight stays in your corner.
In reality you will find you end up utilising both coming forward 'leading off' AND a counter punching style. Being in control of the centre of the ring and taking the opponent to the corners and the ropes. Watching his reactions to your feints and hitting him with good quality 'effective scoring' punches.
➡️Train your self to be reactive to punches that he throws, either block it or slip it and throw an immediate counter punch.
➡️Train hard , fight hard and be ready for your opponent as hes training for you-Good luck !
